Designed by Charles Webb and built as a residence called Mosspennock in 1881/82 for Mr J L Purves, a prominent lawyer and politician, and enlarged in 1889/90. A fine basalt building erected in 1878 to the design of H R Bastow, Chief Architect, Education Department of Victoria and other than for the enlargement of ground floor windows and the additional entrances, not much altered since that time. It is one of only five timber truss bridges to survive in Victoria, and of these, the Genoa Bridge has the maximum number of truss spans.
